I had a massage today. That's not something that happens very often. It was a gift voucher given to me - wait for it - two Christmases ago. (Thanks, sister-in-law! It expires tomorrow. Nothing like leaving things to the last minute.) I was given chamomile tea on arrival and ushered into a dimly lit, near-silent oasis for an hour of pampering. Bliss.
Not wanting the feeling to end, I took my desert-lime and mimosa scented self to a favourite local cafe for a soy latte. I should probably have ordered something cleansing and herbal, but old habits die hard. Besides, I still had to survive dinnerbathbed. I sat at the window bench and retrieved my knitting from my handbag. My iPad was in there so I grabbed that too. I've been a bit to reluctant to jump on the e-book bandwagon, but I have one that I started reading on holidays and promptly dropped once real life resumed - The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.
And so I sat, sipping my glorious coffee, clickety-clacking away on another hat, and reading. Yes, reading. I'm not new to the knit-read combo, but I've always had to choose carefully. Something that lies flat. Something that doesn't need to be re-arranged every time you turn the page. Something with large-ish type.
It wasn't until I'd 'turned' three or four pages seamlessly - just a quick tap of the screen - with minimal interruption to both the knitting AND the story that I realised what I'd hit on. Are the Apple people even aware? The perfect device for the multi-tasking knitting reader. Or reading knitter.
I am delighted.
My book shelves may suffer as a result, but my 'book shelf' is about to get some new additions. What next? Audio books, no doubt.

I did seriously consider getting my knitting out for the sitting-up foot rub part of the massage. Too much?

I am the most untechie person I know! I'm still refusing to use a mobile. Even the lovely one my other half gave me last Christmas is in the bottom of my bag gathering dust!
ReplyDeleteI still love my "real" books but can see the definite advantage in the e version while multitasking. Your book choice is excellent- I read it at the start of the year and found it exceptional for my head space. mel x
ReplyDeleteI love a day of pampering...they don't come around very often around here either but I love them when they do...so glad that you got to enjoy a few minutes to yourself!
ReplyDeleteAnd I will have to tell my mom about the iPad and knitting combo...she is both a knitter and a reader!
I haven't conquered the knit/kindle multitask yet. Nor the knit/nurse combo. Nurse/kindle: can. But really my world won't be complete until knit/nurse/kindle is In the bag. Talk about a holy trinity...
ReplyDeleteI can knit and read subtitles while watching a film, but I'm yet to try a book. I do listen to audiobooks and podcasts (Never not knitting, This American Life, Stephanie Pearl McPhee - http://libwww.freelibrary.org/podcast/media/20080518-stephan.mp3) while I knit though. I don't have an ipad or ereader. Yet.
ReplyDeleteThe massage sounds lovely. In a dream world we could knit and be pampered. Unless the masseuse was a knitter though, they might think you were a nutter. :)
Yes! great! I knit and read but with physical books...never thought about books on the ipad. now that is something I need to try out :)
ReplyDeleteI have a nook that I love, but I love regular books too. I think I am more apt to get fiction on my nook and read it there, rather than putting another paperback on my bookshelves. That green yarn looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteA day of pampering sounds lovely! so glad you enjoyed it! xo
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a wonderful day! I haven't really delved very deep into ebooks and audio books... perhaps I should keep trying!
ReplyDeleteMy husband almost bought me one of them for my birthday, but I said no I liked the feel of a book better. Maybe I made the wrong decision... perhaps there is room for both in this world, especially if you are a knitter :)
ReplyDeleteYour gift certificate story reminds me of the one my husband gave me for a facial at a lovely spa. It stayed "safely" tucked away in the back of my drawer until we were moving, and I ended up giving to a friend since we wouldn't live near the spa anymore! Glad to hear you used yours, sounds like you could use it with two year old twins;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I found your blog, it's lovely!
Cheers!!
I'm reading the happiness project, but have sort of set it aside for a christmas book. Nice green!!
ReplyDeleteI love reading and knitting too! I knit while I read ebooks on the laptop. I don't have an e-reader, but I have quite a collection of ebooks that just get lost in the bowels of my computer because I don't remember to read them!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I also have contemplated pulling out my knitting at those times. I hesitate though. Kudos for your extra bit of quiet indulgence.
ReplyDeleteLove that green and red in your photo! So glad you found a fast way to knit and read!
