Thanks to Ginny and her Yarn Along, Wednesday equals knitting for me, and though there hasn't been much of it going on around here, I feel compelled to post. Like the book situation from last week (which hasn't improved I might add), I'm a bit in-between with the needles too. I'm noncommittal. A strange place for this knitterly knitter to find herself in.
Perhaps it's all that energy I've been burning in the sewing room. One zipper and I'm spent.
But I've flung half a cushion cover on the lawn and photographed it in its many-squared glory. I'm not sure now if it wants a knitted back, or a fabric one. Is it even possible to sew a piece of fabric to a knitted square? Anyone tried it?
Then I went and draped it over the lounge and suddenly I saw it not as a cushion, but one square in a glorious blanket. Something like this one.
Oh, dear. Knitter's indecision.
loving your colours there... nice bit of ditzy floral fabric for the back of the cushion, yup I can see that!
ReplyDeleteIt would look lovely as a cushion or as part of a blanket. I'm so no help. You can certainly sew fabric to the knitted square. Good luck deciding! Jacinta
ReplyDeleteYes it's possible. although I failed when I tried lol! That sure is a gorgeous square, looks great just as it is; I can see the start of a very special blanket there too though. Good luck :)
ReplyDeleteSince my sewing skills are pretty sad, I am seeing a blanket. Love the design and really can see many rows of them across a bed. Very retro-mod!
ReplyDeleteHave a happy day!
That's a very groovy square ya got there!
ReplyDeleteLovely square and I'm interested in seeing what you decide to do whether sewing or not. Great colors!
ReplyDeleteI love that blanket link, but really...are you that committed to this project? I would be afraid that I'd peter out halfway through. But of course, you could approach the blanket in little bits while still knitting other stuffs. I don't know. What a great start, whatever it'll end up becoming.
ReplyDeleteI love the cushion! The colors are great... as always! You can definitely sew fabric to knitting! I would do it by hand, but using very tight stitches on a machine works too. It's just a bit of a process...
ReplyDeleteone tutorial here: http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2008/05/best-way-to-attach-lining-fabric-to.html
and there's another at purlbee.com, but I can't get the page to load right now. If I get it to come up, I'll link it to you later. Good luck!
Lovely pattern and color combo. I think the author of Gentle Art of Domesticity had sewn fabric on knits though I am not sure is she has a tutorial on it. Best of luck!
ReplyDeletePretty! I think a sewn cover would look great with the pattern - it should let the knitted front shine
ReplyDeleteOh, yeah...I can see a number of possibilities for that square! Nice colors, too!
ReplyDeleteMe again!! Perhaps you could knit a contrasting partner and have a look at them alongside one another? Either way, you'll have two fabulous cushions or the beginning of an awesome blanket.
ReplyDeleteWhat lovely colours...i am only just reminding myself how to knit again so no wonderful advice from me i am afraid....but wanted to say it really is a gorgeous square!
ReplyDeleteHere's that second link for you! Hope it helps!

I've made knitted cushions with fabric backs - http://www.ravelry.com/projects/little-bird/cabled-cushion
ReplyDeleteI backed the knitted piece with fabric too so that it would wear better over time, and so that the needle or the foot wouldn't get caught on the knitted surface. Then I slowly sewed up all three layers. You just need to use a lot of pins to keep anything from moving.
:)
I absolutely LOVE the colors in this square! I think it would make an awesome blanket!
