Kid in Blue and a Button Sampler

A chunky knit in blue. Winter warm and easy-wearing for my preschool kid.

I thought it was done, but seeing it on her today I know it's not. The pattern calls for a crocheted edge. That won't happen. What will happen is those sleeves will be ripped back then done over with some shaping and a garter stitch cuff. And it needs a real block on a sunny day, not the rush job I gave it in front of the fire. Perhaps I ought to rip back the bottom too and give it a garter stitch edge.

A sample of big buttons from my favourite button dealer. I like the mix-and-match.

The book failed to make it into the photo again. Still with Alexander McCall Smith.

Ravelry notes here.

Yarn Along here.

  2. It's just beautiful as it is, and those buttons!!!! Love that you've put the "you might also like" link there too.....I've just enjoyed the last 30 minutes trawling through your blog xx

  3. I actually like the bit of flare to it. The sleeves however will probably cause a lot of distress as they will be tough to push up and may get into everything. Love, love, love your buttons. Off to check out that shop.

  6. I never think I'm going to like the rolled edges of just stockinette stitch---but sometimes I think it works fine. I really sort of like it on this sweater---very casual looking, and looks real comfy on her. I'm sure it's going to look great, though, with the adjustments! and like Heather said==they'll probably get in her way. Isn't it fun to be able to do these adjustments???? get just the right look? (I'm listening to an Alexander McCall Smith as my car read.....)

  9. It's lovely! I agree with others - I like the flare and think it looks great. But I also think it's wonderful that you can make it into whatever you want it to be :) And those buttons are wonderful.

  12. I love the roll, to me that adds interest to the sweater and makes it a bit different. Lovely color, great buttons. No way would I rip that out. She looks like she's totally bonded with it. It will be comfortable left as is.

  13. I love the roll, and the sweater looks amazing on your little one. Seeing this I wonder if it could be made for a younger boy as well, with the button side switched and a pair of sailor pants. I just love the colors you chose as well.

  15. Love the chunkiness of this and the slightly belled sleeves. And of course...those buttons!

We've been watching the videos based on the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency. They're fun episodes, but certainly not as good as the books.

  17. I think a garter stitch edge would be lovely if you do not like the rolled edge. Great buttons :)

  18. How cute is that? SUPER CUTE! I love the mix and match buttons, and if you don't like the roll garter stitch will fix that in a giffy.

  19. If you will feel better frogging it back a ways, go for it, but I'd wear it just the way it is and smile all day long!! Sorry, I guess I'm too easy! great buttons! Need to get going on another sweater...

  20. It's totally beautiful as it is! I like the simplicity of it, the rolled edge works for me. The fourth photo with the flicky hair as she turns around is really something.

  25. That is so beautiful! I do not want to say it, but alas, it is true - it is more fun to knit for girls than it is to knit for boys. There, I said it. At least boys' patterns never suggest a crocheted edging...
