Little Cardigans and Lunatics

I was asked a question today that I'm asked often: How do you find the time to knit?

We were at playgroup and her two-year-old was running riot with my pair, who were, naturally, decked out in an array of handknits. (I'm often reminded on these occasions of this card that I received once from a very rude relative - hello, Unc.) Anyway, I proceeded to launch into my explanation about how I find it easy to knit while doing other things, most especially watching TV, but also in waiting rooms, sitting in the passenger seat, at the park, when reading and even sometimes while working at my day job. It was at about the point where I was describing my method of tucking the ball of yarn in between my boobs so I can knit whilst walking around the house that I noticed her eyes had glazed over and she had the look of someone trapped in a conversation with a lunatic and wasn't sure how to extricate herself.

And it occurred to me...some people just don't get the knitting thing.

Rather than worry about that, I thought I'd show you the end result of my attempt to knit a little cardigan in a week. I managed to finish the knitting in time for Hannah's visit, but there were still the ends to weave in and the blocking, so she left without it. Never mind - that's what Australia Post is for.

Ravelry notes here. The pattern is called Helena and it's knit in some Jo Sharp DK wool, colour Orient. Lovely, yes?

And just to settle any rumours about the extent of this knitting obsession, here's the latest addition to the stash. Cascade yarn, mostly chunky 128, with some 220 thrown in for good measure. I have big plans for this haul. Big.

So tell me, lunatic? Or not lunatic?

  1. No way are you a lunatic!! She doesn't know what she is missing out on, and I've come to feel sorry for people that can't understand how wonderful knitting is. I love that cardi, I'm off to look at the pattern. I'm also terribly jealous of your new yarn additions.....so pretty!

  2. Oh no you're not a lunatic but certainly a very clever knitter if I ever did hear of one. Such a better way of using your valuable time if you ask me, I wish I was as clever as you are with your knitting will just stick to crocheting some of my blanket and oh those slippers too:) Love all of that yummy yarn too:) xx

  3. Not a lunatic! Lovely cardigan, the colour is so soft and elegant. I have just resurrected an old knitting project, it's the first time I've knitted in 5 years and I'd forgotten how I LOVE the soothing click of the needles. I can't knit well and I think for me the process of knitting is almost more important than the finished result.

Some people just don't get the "making" thing full stop.

  9. I don't knit. I used to when I was a little girl. But it's one of the last tasks I'd set myself right now. But, honestly, you make me want to dart out and buy some needles and beautiful wool. I love that colour and I love this cardigan. My grandma in England has just sent Kian a little hand knitted jumper. Anyway, not a lunatic. If you are, then maybe I'm a lunatic too, the way I bang on about food and ingredients and little people who make beautiful food for us to put on our table. Some people don't get me either, but that's OK. There are plenty who do.

  10. I will happily jump into the lunatic camp with you :) So many people just don't get it do they? My hubby doesn't quite get it, but tries to be patient for my sake even when I have too many projects on the go and he has to move it all to sit down. Gorgeous yarn you have there, and a beautiful finished project. One day I might tackle something so advanced.
I laughed when I saw that card!

  15. Your little cardigan looks beautiful. People all have different interests and obviously knitting isnt one of hers. Your not a lunatic at all - otherwise there would be quite a few of us around wouldnt there! I cant wait to see what you create out of the Cascade yarns. Very autumnal colors too.

  17. Don't ask me about the lunatic thing, I am the first to admit that's ME! LOL My friends are always amazed at just how many knitting and crochet projects I have on the go all at once. They would not be surprised to find yarn popping out of the oddest places on my person. hehe! The little sweater is adorable and the yarn looks very very yummy! I have not tried Cascade yet but am rather tempted looking at this picture. :-)

  18. If you are a lunatic then so am I :)
I've given up trying to explain my knitting/crocheting obsession to those who ask, I think only other yarn lovers really get where I am coming from.
Both the cardi and yarn are equally delightful Greer.
