Slow School Scarves

Having re-read yesterday's post, I feel I should say, in the interests of truth in reporting, that I don't actually walk around the house knitting. Not in a lost, wandering, 'Downton Abbey' kind of way. But if I'm enjoying knitting something reasonably manageable, often with an unreasonable deadline, and those pesky children of mine are requiring my attention AS THEY SO OFTEN DO (she says gazing dryly over the rim of her martini glass), then I find it a good way to keep knitting and attending to their 'stuff' rather than having to constantly put down and pick up my needles. You know.

If I was knitting as consistently as I perhaps led you to believe, then what excuse have I for the almost year it has taken me to knit this scarf and hat? Hmm? They were a request from a dear friend for her two school girls - scarves and hats in navy blue to wear while waiting for the school bus on chilly mornings. The girls survived one freezing winter without them, and now, on the brink of another, finally they are done. And it is a testament to my love for these girls and their mum that they have them at all because, really, I don't enjoy knitting scarves. Oh, how they go on and on forever in such a repetitive fashion.

A big thanks to my cooperative model...
Still, I am glad to have been able to knit these girls something useful, and even more glad that I am finished. The hat is Amanda Soule's 'My Hat of Choice', and I worked up the scarf with a similar simple lace pattern. The yarn is Cascade 220 in Midnight Blue. Ravelry notes here.

Still thoroughly, and at a snail's pace, enjoying Stephanie Alexander's memoirs.

And joining in with Ginny's Yarn Along here.

  1. Not only have you knit scarves, you knit them and gave them away. I am terrible at giving away knitting and have as yet only given away one baby blanket and one kerchief. Perhaps because I am new to knitting? Or because I am a selfish knitter and only really knit for the children and myself? Crochet on the other hand, I can crochet a baby blanket or toy and hand it over no problems... Anyway, back to the scarves and beanies. They are just lovely and I am sure they will be well used and loved on those chilly mornings. :)

  2. Just gorgeous. I love the colour. I'm sure they will be the warmest kids at the bus stop this winter. I agree about scarves going on and on. I find them a bit tedious in that respect. Jacinta

  3. That blue is lovely. And the pattern is so pretty! I don't knit very many scarves, although my daughter asked me for one last year for Christmas. And how can a Mama ignore that?

  4. I like the scarf!! I think it look light and very wearable. I have knit to many scarves that are just to bulky or not that flattering. I really like this one!

  5. I know what you mean....being a process knitting, you would think I'd be happy knitting anything...but just not so. I have a bunch of started "unloved" knitting on needles....you've given me some incentive to drag them back out.

  6. Lucky friend, they are very, very beautiful. The third photo is lovely - such long eye lashes!

Is the pattern hard? I like the repetition repetition that comes from knitting a scarf. I want to make Bella a hat and scarf in red for next autumn (although i will have to sew Hello Kitty buttons on it so that she wears it.)

  7. Some knitting projects grab my attention and get finished faster than others. I think it has to do with how interested I am in the pattern, or the yarn. Lovely scarf and hat set :)

  8. Your model shows them off well. I just finished a blanket, and I felt the same way you feel about scarves. They just seem to go on and on. Lovely blue.

  9. Wow beautiful knitting! I just love the color and pattern and I am most impressed that after all of that you gave them away. They will be well loved! You are very clever to have adapted the hat pattern to the scarf. It is beautiful.

  10. Oh, you're too funny! The martini comment reminds me of a friend who said her mom waved them off to summer camp with a tray of martinis -- which was being passed from mom to mom -- smiles all around.
Love your pretty blue hat and scarf! The hat has a little 20's flair to it, I think.
    Blessings,

  12. I know what you mean about scarves. I always tell myself I won't knit another one.......well I have one on my needles right now. Sigh. They are just so useful! I love the hat and scarf, and those are some lucky girls!

  13. Well, I am sure this one was worth the wait. Its beautiful. I hear you on the boring scarf thing. I have a request for one right now and have been putting it off. Now I feed bad. LOL In my own defence I do have around 8 projects on the go that need to be finished and another adult sized coat on order. Must get off the computer and get back to it. :-)

  14. I love how she's pretending to take a nap...or maybe she's telling you that enough is enough with all the photos already (no wait, that' my brood who tell me that!). Lovely hat and scarf and such a wonderful blue.

  15. Oh my gorgeous friend!!! I know one (if not two) little people who will be as warm as toast on those fabulous single digit mornings as the wind howls and the minutes tick past like hours! Thank you thank you thank you. You knit, sew, love, cook, befriend, nurture, clean, blog and support. To my very bestest friend ever, thank you xxx

  16. I always tend to think of scarves as mini wraps/shawls. They are much faster. Your scarf and hat set look beautiful, what lucky girls! I hope they keep them nice and warm on those chilly winter mornings, and the blue looks very pretty and shows up the pattern perfectly.

  17. Love the colour, I love knitting scarfs but that is probably because I'm a fairly new knitter, my next project is hopefully a hat, fingers crossed it turns out right,

  18. Really gorgeous and no matter that it took longer than intended. The important thing is she will be nice and toasty in beautiful hand knits this winter. I made a scarf last winter for Julia, but am hoping to make some beanies for the kids this winter. Hopefully sooner rather than later. The Stephanie Alexander book looks very interesting.
