Serious/Not Serious

Some serious and some not so serious reading this week. After my plaintive cry for help a few weeks ago, a small book order was placed. I added Simplicity Parenting to the basket because it has been on my wishlist for a while and I thought it might supplement the toddler titles well. And the ideas within already make such sense to me - less stuff, less screen time, less rushing, less stress - so I'm keen to back up my own thoughts with somebody else's science and professional viewpoint.

When the opportunity for a quick escape arose this afternoon, I popped the book into my bag with some knitting - another hat in green. But upon arriving at the cafe on the corner and ordering my soy latte, suddenly I didn't want to read about parenting, or childing, or mumming, or familying, or any other serious 'ing. And then the latest glorious Gourmet Traveller bounced into my hands...with its chocolate and banana French toast with salted caramel oozing off the cover, I mean, how could I resist...

Seriously good.

Yarn Along over here.

And when not knitting hats, I'm making merry progress on the pink queue-jumping jumper too...

  1. Oh yes, sometimes, a lot of the time, I put the serious stuff aside and reach for something else. You know me, the something else is always food. I never resist.

  2. I love Simplicity Parenting. I think I might buy it, now that you have mentioned it. When I requested it from the library I had to wait a few months...don't want to do that again!

  3. Sometimes a mama just needs a chocolate break, even if it's only in a magazine!

  4. I think non-serious reading is the perfect way to spend some time alone. Plus the way you describe the cover - it would be hard to resist.

  13. Good to hear I'm not the only one who reads to their mood at the time. I really enjoyed Simplicity Parenting. Like you I'd had it on my wish list for quite some time, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable, interesting read.

  14. Sounds like you had a good little time to yourself. Your post made me laugh because I made a trip to the library and came home with a giant tote bag of parenting titles. I have a 2 year old and a 1 year old that keep me on my toes. Maybe I should get Gourmet Traveller instead:)

  15. Good for you Greer. Bugger the hard stuff, chocolate's the way to go! I've started a 'Conversations with kids'course - I'll send you the info. Might not apply to the toddlers as much but invaluable for the 5 yr old (and teens I'd expect). More on that over a mulled wine this w/e.

  17. Less is so often more, with kids, with knitting, and with how many pages good reading material has. Salted caramel French toast you say, oh my!
