Afternoon Delight*

This blog will never be a confessional. It's never going to be the whole story. Occasionally I may rant, or moan, or tell a sad tale, but the words are always carefully considered, as much exercises in writing and storytelling as any kind of giving away.

Some weeks the energy flows, as do the words and pictures. Other weeks I struggle. I've been at it here, regularly, for nearly two years. For more than half of that time I had about a dozen readers, most of whom I knew in real life. It took me a long time to learn that if I wanted people to visit my blog, I had to visit theirs AND let them know I'd been with a comment or a little click on the 'follow' button.

My following here isn't huge, but it is so lovely. Genuinely nice people with genuinely nice things to say. Encouragement, advice, friendship. I like it. Yes, I do.

And more lovely, every now and then I find my little blog's name in the 'favourites' list on other blogs. What a compliment. You can't even know the lift that gives me. I'm not sure what people see when they visit here, and why they return. I hope it's for some half-decent writing, a half-decent eye for a pretty photo. A sense of fun. Something good to eat. Cute kids swathed head to toe in handknits. Oh, relentless knitting.

I probably don't say it nearly enough, if at all, but thank you - for visiting, commenting, and making me feel like something I'm doing here is having some small impact out there.

I should probably end with a question because I've been told that's the way to engage readers and start a conversation. But I won't 'cause it always seems a bit contrived when I do it. Is that OK with you?

(*I found some more of that glorious afternoon light, or "afternoon delight", as my friend Bri calls it. Look at my golden-haired babe up there.)

  1. And I still remember being your 50th follower. You're right up there on my favourites list. In fact, (and I'm not being deliberately gushy) if all the bloggers invited me to their house for a cuppa and slice of cake, yours would be the first I'd rush to. Cosy, warm, friendly, fun, beautiful words and full of little saucepots like I have here. That's why I keep coming back.

  7. Fine with me! Why do I read and follow your blog? All of the above. Also, I get a kick out of seeing a glimpse of a lifestyle that is not unlike mine but on the other side of the world. Silly, I know. That photo is dreamy. Afternoon light is special.

  8. I absolutely adore your blog. I will say you are a wonderful writer. But more so your children are adorable. One of your girls reminds me so much of my younger one and that's why I check in every day! Plus I love handknits as well (although I haven't figured out how to knit yet). I just started blogging yesterday!

  10. what a lovely collection of thoughts, greer...you've articulated the majority of blog writers here, I think. I'm really enjoying the little community that has popped up around visiting and commenting on each others' lives. I was worried that nobody new was visiting my place, but over the last couple of days the usual folk i see have been so kind and helpful in their comments, and i've been well pleased, and grateful, too.

oh, and that afternoon delight? delish. those curls are amazing! :)sarah

  16. Greer you write amazingly well. You knitting is beyond measure. Your baking sends me green with envy. And the photos were good before - but just look at them now! It can be kind of awful to feel like you're getting caught up in the popularity side of having a blog, but yours is down to earth and just plain lovely. Of course people will keep coming back! Kellie xx

  19. when I stopped by your blog for the first time last week I wanted to come and stay with you, live in that space you create so beautifully with your family, your photo's and your words, cooking, loving, and that beautiful knitting, it all draws me in! So glad to have met you and found your little bloggy space.

I haven't shared by blog with anyone but a few friends, so it was a big deal to share my link with the nursery crew. It is still in it's infancy and I feel it and I need to grow together before I'm ready to share it more broadly.
