I'm always surprised by the power of a firmly delivered, "One..."
Nine times out of ten, it's enough to make the four-year-old leap up from what she's being distracted by to attend to what I've asked her to do. Usually several times. And which she has ignored. Until she hears that fear-inducing "One..."

If I get to "Two..." then things are really serious.
Of course, it's a bit harder to remain serious when the "One" and "Two" are followed by a sweet little "Thwee-four-fi-sickie..." from across the room.
