Serial Monogamy

If you'd chanced upon my bedroom a week ago you would have found no less than four books and a couple of magazines littering the floor beside my bed. It's what happens when I'm not enjoying my current read. I struggle to commit and my gaze wanders. I find myself looking about at bedtime for a different companion, one that will hold my attention longer than a paragraph or two. In simple terms, I get promiscuous. Before I know it, I'm half a chapter into four different books and even then turning to the short-term pleasure of a well-written magazine feature.

This week, my reputation is back intact. I'm happily ensconced with a single reading partner. It ain't rocking my world, but at least the story has me interested. And thanks to some happy finds at an Australia Day fair bookstall last week, as well as a lovely surprise birthday gift, there are another three good reads (I hope) on the horizon. Bring on the serial monogamy.

I've been diligently knitting away at a new little cardigan - the Playful Stripes by Alana Dakos. This one is destined for Stella. I'm using Baby Cashmerino (again!), mainly in a deep purple (again!), with lots of lovely stripey colourfulness. It's my first attempt at a bottom-up knit where the sleeves are added onto the body before beginning the yoke. Exciting stuff! And so much more sensible than knitting in pieces! I have plans for all that leftover yarn too - some striped Legwarmies for the girls.

  1. Very cute sweater! I have not knit a bottom up sweater, only top down, so this way looks interesting.
There are times when I struggle to find something to read and then others when I have too much! Glad you found something to hold you attention.

  2. I have really struggled to read novels at all since I had my first babe almost 4 years ago, so this year I have challenged myself to 1 novel per month! So far so good, although we are only in February...Hopefully once it starts to get into winter here I will feel more like reading!

  3. I find when I have trouble focusing on a book I stray back to my "old faithfuls" to get back into a reading groove. :)

  5. I love reading, but if it takes me a bit to get into a book, I usually give it up and look for something different. I figure there are so many books out there, I can find one that I really want to read :-)

  6. Great idea on the stripey legwarmers to match! That sweater pattern is too adorable.

  7. Oh. The sewing up of many peices. All in one, or just a few parts, takes the chore out of it all. I'm with you on that one. Same as the number of books. One is best, but others just creep in given half a chance!

  8. I love knitting sweaters. But once the knitting is done it takes forever to be wearable due to the fact that I hate sewing on the sleeves. I like the idea of the bottom up pattern! And legwarmies are on my to do soon list too! Love the pattern.

  9. Is there any yarn softer than DB cashmerino??? I love that stuff and my stash of it is nearly gone. :(

I call that manic search for a good read (which is harder to find after you have finished a REALLY good one--my stutter starting....a chapter here, a chapter there--start an audio book--same thing until something grabs.) Drives me crazy--with all those millions of books in the world, I have trouble finding a "good" one!!!!

Love this week's knitting. Sweet sweater!

  10. Promiscuous reader! I love it! I'm similar, but I don't keep the boring books around. If they don't hook me after 50 pages or I find myself not wanting to return to that book then - BAM - back to the library you go. Life's too short to read a boring book.

That cardigan looks great so far. I'm a one color knitter, so I get very excited to see other's mad knitting skilz!

  11. Love the stripes for that cardigan. I'm with you with reading...I like to think of myself as fickle rather than promiscuous :) I don't know what it is...I have a huge pile next to my bedside table and on the floor, books in various parts of the house, and I read a little bit then pick up something else. Hope it doesn't reflect the state of my mind...foggy and jumbled.

  12. I just wrote about my Knitting ADD. Sounds a bit like your promiscuity! I love using the baby cashmerino. I think this sweater will be a hit and so much easier than seaming!

  13. Cute sweater! I know what you mean about the reading- so frustrating! My go-to move if I'm stuck for a good read is to check out a novel in the juvenile or YA section- they're fast reads and that helps me get moving again.

  20. I seem to have a chronic case of book hopping and have been having trouble pinning myself down to just one book too. Guess I'm just not feeling like wasting precious reading time on a book I don't really love. And I love the stripey cardi pattern - so cute!
